Season 2012:

Round 5

So for the third week running we have managed 3 wins out of 4 games on Saturday.  The Seniors have moved to 4th on the ladder with 4 wins and 1 loss for the season following their 16 point win over Elsternwick AFC.  Kinga starred in the win helping feed Ash who booted a lazy 8 goals.  The Reserves also had a win against Elsternwick, getting home  by 50 points and moving up to 5th on the ladder, sitting 3 and 2.  Booga again in the goals, kicking 6 this week.  The Under 19s continued on with their outstanding form, smashing MHSOB by 86 points.  The ladder on the VAFA website looks a little odd with our boys sitting 3rd with only 1 loss and having beaten both the teams above them??!  Unfortunately the Clubbies had a very tough task this week, taking on Old Xaverians.  The boys fought hard but eventually went down by 113 points.  At this stage there is no match report for any of the games on the weekend, but if anyone has one and sends it through to ivanhoeafc@gmail.com it will get posted.

Round 4

Two weeks in a row we have managed to get three wins from our four games but this week it was the Club 18s that missed out.  The Seniors took on Hawthorn on their stomping ground and despite being behind at half time, came through with a 22 point victory.  The Reserves managed a comfortable 48 point win over Hawthorn with Booga kicking 3 of the 10 goals.  The Under 19s took on the undefeated top team Therry Penola at Ivanhoe Park and kept them to 2 goals for the day and ran away with a 77 point victory with Danny Jones leading the way with a BOG performance.  They have now stamped themselves as one of the top teams for 2012!  The Club 18s took on NOBS/St Pats away and despite getting off to a great start, were over run in the last quarter to lose by 44 points.  Tim Sheehan once again managed to kick a bag, this week 5 majors.  Lets hope we can get 4 wins this weekend!

Seniors:

Round 4 saw the Ivanhoe Hoe’s Travel to Rathmines Rd Reserve to play against the Hawthorn Hawks.  A ground which always seems to prove difficult to play vs. a team which likes to challenge their opponents physically and who always put up a fight.  The Return of Brent “Big Sauce” Richardson and Will “Juddy” Servinis to the line-up were crucial pre match talking points, along with reminiscing over the punch on in the 2’s last year and the disappointment in the lack of dim-sims in the canteen.

The first quarter was a tight battle, neither team really taking control of the game or applyed any scoreboard pressure.  Ivanhoe had plenty of opportunity in front of goal, however unable to convert, finished with 1 goal 6 at quarter time.

Things didn’t go to well in the 2nd term, again we had more scoring shots but were unable to convert, the only goal coming from the best set shot in the league who finished a free kick for the injured Ash Close.  The 2nd saw Hawthorn put on 4 goals to the Hoes 1 and take a 9 point lead into half time.  With Big Ash looking down and out, and the scoreboard looking ugly, something had to change.

Quarter 3 started off with a bit more spirit.  Some serious intent on winning the footy was shown, along with a willingness to run once we gained possession. Some rough house treatment of Justin Harty who was slammed into the turf seemed to fire the boys up even more.  Timmy Williamson laid an incredible hip and shoulder on a Hawks opponent, as we managed to kick some early goals.  Tim and Justin, along with Reece Cotter got the ball moving quick and clean out of the middle, utilising big Richo up forward, along with Mali Jacobs and Matt Pilla.  Up by 13 points at 3 qtr time, the mood was positive and the desire to work was back.

The last quarter was much of the same, Pete Ford was continually providing run from the back half all day, while Kinga was getting plenty of loose ball around the wings.  Another big performance from Ryan Fort in the ruck was inspiring to all, going up against multiple opponents and getting plenty of hand on ball.  Mali finished the day with 3 goals, showing he is capable all over the ground, while J-Hart jagged another 2 from midfield.  A good win, which could have been better with a 4 qtr performance.

This weekend see’s us move to the only ground smaller than Hawthorn…. Elsternwick.  Again we need to be switched on, as they play their ground well and are capable of scoring goals quickly.

Don’t forget the upcoming “Miss Universe in Reverse” and “Pleasant Sunday” functions, both sure to be crackers!!

Unfortunately I won’t be able to report on this match due other commitments, so if someone else would like to give it a go please speak with Rossco!

Round 3

On Saturday the club had three wins out of four games with the Seniors beating Kew, the Under 19s smashing AJAX and the Club 18s easily taking care of local rivals Old Ivanhoe.  The Reserves had a tough day at the office losing to the top team Kew.  The seniors celebrated the ‘Ducks’ 200th in great style with Ash Close booting 6 goals in the 54 point win.  In the Clubbies Tim Sheehan had another great day also booting 6 goals helping them to a 46 point win.  Jack Delbridge and Danny Jones lead the way for the Under 19s helping Jai Swainger bag 7 goals on their way to an 89 point victory.

Seniors:

Round 3 saw the Hoes’ host Kew in a wet and slippery affair down at Ivanhoe Park.  It was a momentous occasion, Damon Wood playing his 200th game for the club.  The Dustin Fletcher of D3 footy’s day could have started a little better, as when the 200 game banner finally arrived, it turned into a bit of a disaster; however it proved to be water off a ducks back! (Champaign comedy!)

The first quarter saw a determined and purposeful Ivanhoe outfit dominate the game, keeping Kew to 1 point compared with our 3 goals.  Whilst it was only a 3 goal lead, the signs were all positive as we had first use of the ball and looked to go long and direct where possible.  Big Barrel was like a pig in mud early, laying his customary tackles and bumps… it’s fair to say I have a man crush on him, but it was Mali and Justin Harty who were again proving to be the class.

We started a little slow in the second, and there were a few concerns that the Hoes may have switched off, though this all changed as we managed to stretch the lead out to 26 points at half time.  Big Ash was looking dangerous and clean with the ball up forward, Tom O’Donnell looked composed down back in his first senior game.  Things got a little bit heated just before the long break, Garthy was fired up and even Rhino came in to back him up!

The half time break was highlighted by a 3 dimmys for $2 special, a bit of Kikoman soy sauce and a seat in front of the heater.  Matt McCrystal had to be escorted off the ground and was fearing for his life after making goal umpiring blunder during the 2nd quarter.  Club President Grant McKenzie was trying to convince me Melbourne were up for it against Geelong… he failed.

The 2nd half was much of the same.  Reece Cotter was excellent coming back from a suspension, but the lack of match fitness showed when he started cramping in the 3rd quarter.  2 goals and some great grabs from Lachie “Dukes” Roberts and some more clever work from Ash saw the scoreboard tick over nicely.  My man Barrel Francis went down with an ankle injury, but this didn’t deter anyone else from the task at hand.

The final quarter seemed to be more about getting a goal for the Duck than anything else, and this never happened.  Apparently he was kicking goals at the provincial in the early hours of Sunday morning though..  The game came to and end with Ivanhoe up by a 54 points in a day to be remembered.  A great win to celebrate a great man and his great achievement.  Let’s make sure this is not the last great day for the club in 2012.  That would be great.

This week we travel to Hawthorn, always a challenge on their ground as they play it well.  If we turn up with the same attitude and Skelly is back in the side, there should be no problem getting the 4 points, and celebrating Kinga’s birthday at 7 nightclub.

Round 2

Round 2 of 2012 saw the clubs fortunes reverse from Round 1 with the Seniors and Reserves going down to Yarra Valley at Domeney Reserve and both the Under 19s and Club 18s getting their first wins for the season.  Yarra Valley were simply too strong for us in the seniors and with no interchange after half time we were run over comprehensively in the last quarter.  The Reserves showed great spirit and took a handy lead in at half time only for Yarra to fight their way back for a 3 goal win.  On the positive side our Under 19s fought back from a 6 goal deficit at half time to inflict a 2 point win on Williamstown CYMS with Jai Swainger kicking 4 second half goals!  The Club 18s set up their win with a 5 goal to nil second quarter, winning by 32 points at the final siren.  Last years league leading goal kicker, Tim Sheehan, starred with 8 goals!

Seniors:

Round 2 saw the Hoes head up the hill to take on Yarra Valley Bushrangers at a ground which has not brought us any success over the past few seasons.  Unfortunately the trend continued, both senior sides suffering a loss and picking up a few injuries along the way.

The Hoes got off to a solid start, big Ash “Andy Schleck” Close kicking an early goal and doing a bit of solid fist pumping work to razz up the boys.  It’s a shame things weren’t so exciting for the rest of the first term and we went into the break 3 goals down.

Unfortunately the same occurred in the 2nd term, again Yarra kicked 3 more goals than the Hoes and stretched their lead to 6 goals at the long break.  For the Hoes Justin Harty and Mali Jacobs again proved to be the drive out of midfield, with Conor Mitchell playing a great sweeping role across half back, regularly chopping off opposition kicks.

The 3rd quarter came along and the boys managed to tighten things up, we had the majority of the play in our forward half.  Unfortunately this could not be converted with score board pressure, we were still out scored for the quarter, and by 3 quarter time had no fit men on the bench.  The little Whippet Jacob Brundenell gave it his best across the half forward line and always looked dangerous…. reminded me of myself in days gone by, and provided excellent support to the big boys up forward.

The last quarter was a tough one to watch was from the sidelines, Yarra dominated play and we barely looked like scoring.  One of the few highlights for the day was Big Bustling Glen Barrel Francis again knocking someone out with one of his trademark body slamming tackles.

Back at home against our local rivals Kew this week and hoping to turn things around, nothing but a win will be accepted!

Round 1

The Seniors and Reserves have started the season with victories against Albert Park today.  The Seniors had a 12 point win, 14.13-97 to 12.13-85 with Lachie Roberts kicking 4 goals in his first senior game for the club and Mali Jacobs best afield.  The Reserves smashed Albert Park, 19.13-127 to 8.7-55, best afield ‘Booga’ Brazzale managed a lazy 8 goals!!  The Under 19s went down by 6 points to Old Geelong with OG scoring the winning goal in the last minute 7.19-61 to 10.7-67.  Great effort by the Unders, another strong year ahead for them I’m sure.  The Clubbies had a tough task being in the top division this year and went down to St Bernards 17.13-115 to 5.15-45, hopefully they can turn it around next week against Fitzroy at home.  Below is a review of the Seniors game.

Seniors:

2012 was underway with the might Hoe’s hosting the Falcons from Albert Park.  The day was set up beautifully with the sun shining, the ex players enjoying themselves at a presidential luncheon and Stevie G’s 2’s giving their opponents a touch up.

With several players making their debut and several returning to the Ivanhoe fold, it was a fresh and confident looking Ivanhoe side still missing some key players.  The boys got off to a flyer, Mali Jacobs set the scene early off his wing with plenty of run and carry.  In fact Mali was brilliant all day, both on the ground level and in the air when he needed to be.  He even managed to keep his brilliant form going at the Back to School function Saturday night, regularly reminding everyone that he was the current best and fairest leader.  At quarter time the Hoes were up by around 4 goals and looked the goods.

Unfortunately we could not maintain the same level of dominance for the remainder of the match, Albert Park gradually worked their way into the game through hard work and perhaps a bit more desire.  Throughout the game Ash Close looked dangerous up forward, dominating the airways and clunking some big grabs.  Unfortunately he was not so efficient with the ball in hand, finishing with 3 goals, 4 points and 2 on the full.  Lachie “Dukes” Roberts provided an excellent alternative avenue to goal, on debut he finished with 4 majors leading the goals tally for the club.

Big Ryan Fort was giving the exciting prospect of rucking solo for 4 quarters and took to the task with a solid workman like performance, He definitely earned every cigarette this weekend with an excellent effort.  Ryan was well supported in the middle by captain Harro, Big Bustling Barrel Francis, along with Justin Harty and Chris Kingsford who were playing their Ivanhoe senior debuts.  Kingsford showed poise and great decision making skills with the ball in hand, kicked a great goal and is probably leading in the celebration of the season award.  Unfortunately his poise and class disappeared on Saturday night when he attempted the worm in the rooms and following this was on the end of the biggest wedgie in the history of mankind.

The backline were well lead by the big fellas Duck, Posty and Chippa and got plenty of run and support from Adzy, Fordy and Flemo.  Wood Duck also managed to lead Barrel astray after the club function Saturday night, taking him to what Barrel described as “Grab-a-Granny” to get a bit of work done.

The last quarter was another tight affair with the Hoes holding out Albert Park to record a win in round 1, which was the main objective of the day.  The boys celebrated and had a great night going “Back to School” and busting a few moves in the first ever Dubstep Dungeon.  Mickey V was probably the best looking girl in the club, which is no disrespect to the girls… he just looked hot.

Bring on round 2 and a real test of where we are at with Yarra Valley.
